Living soil vs. coco vs. hydro – which one should a home grower choose? All three can grow great plants. The difference is how much work, equipment and knowledge they ask from you. Here is an honest comparison.
Hydro: maximum control, maximum attention
In hydroponics the roots grow in water or an inert medium and get all their nutrition from a nutrient solution. That gives a lot of control and fast growth – but also little margin for error. You measure and correct EC and pH regularly, maintain pumps and reservoirs, and a mistake shows up in the plant within days.
Coco: fast, but you feed every time
Coco coir is an airy, inert substrate. It holds water and air well, but contains almost no nutrients of its own. That means feeding with mineral nutrients at (almost) every watering, keeping an eye on pH and EC, and using a CalMag supplement in many cases. Fast growth – but it is still a feeding system you have to manage.
Living soil: the soil feeds the plant
In living soil the nutrition sits in the soil itself, as organic material that bacteria and fungi break down step by step. The soil buffers the pH and releases nutrients as the plant needs them. You water with plain, chlorine-free water. Less control over every detail – but far fewer ways to get it wrong. More background: living soil vs. super soil vs. mineral nutrients.
Living soil vs coco vs hydro: side by side
| Living soil (Monster Soil) | Coco | Hydro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feeding | Built into the soil | Nutrients at (almost) every watering | Nutrient solution, constantly |
| pH / EC measuring | Not needed | Regularly | Constantly |
| Equipment | Pot + water | Pots, nutrients, pH meter | Reservoir, pumps, meters, nutrients |
| Margin for error | Large | Medium | Small |
| Reuse of medium | Yes, refresh with Concentrate | Possible, with rinsing and buffering | Depends on system |
| Best for | Beginners and growers who want simplicity | Growers who like to steer | Experienced, technical growers |
Which one should you choose?
- Choose living soil if you want the simplest routine: water and light, no meters, no feeding chart – and soil you can reuse.
- Choose coco if you like to steer growth week by week and don’t mind mixing nutrients and checking pH and EC at almost every watering.
- Choose hydro if you are an experienced, technical grower who wants maximum control and is willing to monitor the system daily.
For most home growers – and certainly for a first grow – the deciding factor is margin for error. In the living soil vs coco comparison, living soil simply forgives more.
Our take
If you enjoy measuring and fine-tuning every week, coco or hydro will keep you busy. If you want healthy plants with as little hassle as possible, living soil is the logical choice – and with Monster Soil you don’t even have to build the soil yourself. Just water and light.
