Living soil for beginners doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it is one of the easiest ways to grow your first plant: no nutrient bottles, no feeding chart, no pH meter. In this guide we walk you through a complete first grow with Monster Soil in seven simple steps.
Why living soil is ideal for beginners
Most first-grow problems come from feeding: too much, too little, the wrong pH. In living soil the nutrition is already in the soil and the soil life releases it as the plant needs it. That removes the biggest source of mistakes. Your job is reduced to two things: water and light. Want to understand what happens underground? Read What is living soil?
Step 1 – Choose your format
- Monster Soil Pot – 10.8 L of ready-to-use living soil in its own 11-litre pot. Nothing to mix. Best for a first grow.
- Monster Soil Concentrate – 50 L that you mix 1:1 with organic soil to make 100 L, enough for up to 9 pots of 11 L. Best if you grow several plants or want to fill your own pots.
Step 2 – Find the right spot
Give your plant a bright location: a sunny spot or a place under a grow light. Consistent light is what drives growth – the soil takes care of the rest.
Step 3 – Open the pot (or mix your soil)
With the Pot: remove the lid and use it as a saucer underneath. With the Concentrate: mix it 1:1 with a good organic potting soil and fill your pots with at least 11 L per plant. See the Concentrate guide for details.
Step 4 – Plant
Place a young plant or a pre-germinated seedling directly into the soil. Sensitive seedlings like a gentle start: make a small planting hole and fill it with a little light seedling soil as a buffer zone – about 0.3 L in the Pot, about 0.5 L in a pot filled with mixed Concentrate.
Step 5 – Water with chlorine-free water
Use rainwater, or tap water that has stood for 24 hours. Keep the soil evenly moist and avoid waterlogging. No pH adjusting, no additives. More tips in How to water living soil.
Step 6 – Let the soil do the work
This is the hardest step for many new growers: doing nothing. Don’t add fertiliser or boosters – Monster Soil is pre-fertilised and built to carry the plant through its full cycle. Keep watering, keep the light consistent and watch your plant grow.
Step 7 – Harvest, then reuse your soil
After the harvest your soil is not waste. Loosen it and mix in 3–4 L of Monster Soil Concentrate for every 10 L of used soil, and you are ready for the next grow. Read How to reuse living soil.
Common beginner mistakes
- Adding nutrients “just in case” – not needed, and it can upset the balance in the soil.
- Using fresh chlorinated tap water – let it stand for 24 hours first, or use rainwater.
- Waterlogging – moist, not soaking. Empty standing water from the saucer.
- Too little light – soil can’t compensate for a dark spot.
